CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Driving home, I wondered how Cade was doing. I missed his scowl. His scar. That deep, sexy voice issuing stupid rules. I hadn’t heard from him all day and realized I didn’t even have the sorcerer’s phone number. How ridiculous was that? I’d practically climbed into bed with him, but I couldn’t text him. The man was infuriating.

I scampered into the house and sucked down a bottle of cold water before placing the Valentino at the top of my closet. I wasn’t hiding it—exactly. I just didn’t want Cade to see it yet.

I grabbed a quick, cool shower. While drying my hair, I mentally reviewed everything I knew about London and Stephanie, their deaths and their lives. London had secrets—dating a vamp, a werewolf, the mysterious Vane. She liked rough sex, but Nick claimed he’d never left bruises. Did James Sharpe come back to deliver a beat down? If so, why did she wear them publicly? I didn’t think we’d scratched the surface of London’s private life.

And poor Stephanie. She didn’t seem to have any friends at all. She was a witch without power. She occasionally shopped at Blessed Be. She worked as a caterer. Had Stephanie seen something she shouldn’t have? Did she know secrets about London? I had far more questions than answers, and that was frustrating.

After dressing in fresh clothes, I made myself comfortable while I thumbed through the cursed grimoire. The book was old. The papers had been stitched in place, each spell hand-written. I knew theoretically that results yielded from such simple spells depended on the power of the practitioner. The stronger the witch, the more effective the spell.

I trailed my finger over a drawing of mugwort, a key ingredient in a nine herbs charm—a standard potion for infections back in the day. I read over the instructions, glad for once I didn’t have to rely on magic and could count on my friend, penicillin, instead. There was some serious preparation involved in this spell. Lots of cooking. Shudder.

The grimoire didn’t offer me any clues to Stephanie’s death. I finally stuck it back in the evidence bag and placed it on the coffee table. Cade would have a cow when he found out I’d taken it, but he’d get over it.

I made a microwave dinner, ate half of it, and then paced the house, willing the phone to ring. Had Cade found Vane Aldridge? If so, what did Aldridge know about London? Question after question. My brain wouldn’t stop chasing its tail.

Around eight, my doorbell rang. I thought it might be Cade, then remembered he didn’t ring. He pounded on the door, demanding to be let in.

I found Sunny on my porch with a handful of papers. Despite the heat, her white blouse retained its crisp, starched appearance.

“What are you doing here? Just seeking the pleasure of my company?”

She slipped past me to enter the house. “Hardly. You need to sign the monthly expense report.”

I quirked a brow. “Really. Why didn’t you have me sign it at the office?”

She shifted slightly, poked at her glasses.
